利茲大學的前身是建立于1831年的利茲醫學院，以及建立于1874年的約克郡科學院。1887年這兩個學校與曼徹斯特歐文學院、利物浦大學學院合并為維多利亞聯合大學。1904年利茲大學獲得皇家許可而成為獨立的大學。經過一個多世紀的發展，利茲大學成為了英國最負盛名的大學之一。利茲大學還是英國白玫瑰大學聯盟、N8大學聯盟、英聯邦大學聯盟、歐洲大學聯盟、紅磚大學和羅素大學集團成員。利茲大學位于英格蘭北部利茲市。大學的主體部分皆建于19世紀下半葉，當時的目的是為了達成對當地科學和技術發展的教育要求。1904年英王愛德華七世正式授予利茲大學大學的名號。
