The table reveals some information concerning the underground railway systems in six metropolitan cities.

London has the oldest underground railway system. Opened in as early as 1863, it is nearly 40 years older than the second oldest one in Paris, which was opened in 1900, and even more than 130 years older than the latest one in Los Angeles, which was opened in 2001. The one in Tokyo, opened in 1927, is the oldest one in Asia.

Besides its longest history, the underground railway in London is also the largest one, the length of route totalling 394 kilometres, which is almost twice as long as that of Paris, that length of the latter being 199 kilometres. By contrast, Kyoto and Los Angeles has the smallest underground railway systems, the length of which are only 11 kilometres and 28 kilometres, respectively.

What is interesting is that while Tokyo has only 155 kilometres of route, the system serves as many as 1927 million people per year, which ranks No. 1 in all six cities. Another city in Japan, Kyoto, has only 45 million passengers per year, being the least. But since its routes add up to only 11 kilometres, its efficiency is not as low as that of Washington. While the routes in Washington are over 10 times that of Kyoto, the system in the former serves only 3 times more people than does the latter.

All in all, the underground railroad systems in the six cities differ from one another in aspect of their ages, scales and efficiency.
