Task:Some people think only best students should be rewarded, others think we should reward students who make progress.

Sample answer:

It is universally believed that providing students with many rewards is an effective way to improve academic performance. Although some would argue that only those top students are eligible to receive these rewards, I am in the camp that anyone who makes progress should be rewarded as well.

Firstly, advocates believe that it is reasonable to offer prizes to the high-level performers. This is because one needs to pay a great amount of effort than other classmates in order to earn a high grade in the exam. In addition, top performers normally act as a facilitator to encourage other students to work harder and they can create a competitive learning setting in the school.

However, rewarding top players merely is likely to result in some undesirable results in some occasions. The reason is that those best students are relatively few in the class. If we only pay attention to those high-level learners and ignore the rest of the students, the enthusiasm for study might be reduced. Some opponents, therefore, feel that it is necessary for teachers to give certain awards to those who put forward reasonable efforts in study. The extrinsic reward provided to them is not only a recognition of their former performance, but also a motivator for further study since a sense of accomplishment can boost their confidence and help them become the high-level students eventually.

In conclusion, my view is that both types of students should be rewarded, which is beneficial for the learning environment in the campus.

Task:The speeding up of life in areas such as travel and communications is negatively affecting the society at every level --- individual, national, and global. Do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, modern technologies have sharply speeded up people’s traveling and communication. Some people argue that there are many negative results behind this fast-paced trend, personally, nationally, and globally. Personally, I strongly agree with this view, and my reasons will be explored as below.

Firstly, on the personal level, an accelerated life pace make individuals stressful, due to it breaks the balance between working and living. For example, airplanes, the fastest transportation nowadays, can largely shorten the time of people’s long-distant traveling, while its high efficiency also causes higher work expectancy and tighter work schedule. For example, in a single day, a manager of multi-national companies is asked to take plane to go for a meeting in another region and country far away in the morning, and fly back to the home at night. This fast and exhausting lifestyle not only damages people’s health, but also alienates them from families, because of the lack of time spent on exercise, rest, or dinners with spouse and children.

In addition, on the international level, fast systems of global transportation and communication worse the environment. For one thing, an increasing number of cross-border air flights mean more fossil oil is burned and more waste gas is emitted, such as smog. As a result, this kind of discharge further deteriorates the global warming. Similarly, for the purpose of building up a modern seamless communication system for cell phones and the Internet, new base stations are installed in mountains and forests, new cable ropes are buried under the seabed. These constructions make an overall destruction to the global ecosystem, thus leading to the extinction of species.

Finally, on the national level, the thriving of fast long-distant traveling and communication would destroy cultural identities of a country. For example, fast airplanes bring more foreigners to a region or a country for cross-border meetings and tours. In order to meet the needs and tastes of these new comers, local old buildings are replaced by modern skyscrapers, and traditional cuisines are replaced by western fast food like McDonald. What is more, advertisements and videos of a pop culture on the Internet, from Hollywood movies to rock music, from Paris fashions to online games, draw all attention of the public in any local area. In other words, under the influence of the Internet which plays a role of cultural invader, people will lose the interests and respects in their local culture.

In conclusion, adverse consequences of a fast-paced world are undeniable, including an unbalanced lifestyle, environmental problems caused by airplanes and telecommunication, and the disappearance of a local culture.

Task:Some people think that in the modern society individuals are becoming more dependent on each other, while others say that individuals are becoming more independent of each other. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Should the level of interdependence between people of today be up or down? This question has been a heated social issue in debate, and resulted in opposite views among the public. Personally, I believe current human is more independent than before, and my reasons will be explored as below.

In terms of information communication, the thriving Internet today has reduced the level of people’s connection with others, because this technology can provide more abundant, timely and objective information to every social individual. In other words, modern people are used to relying on the Internet for the acquirement of news, knowledge, social experience and even answers of school tasks, rather than face-to-face questioning, talking or discussing with others. Therefore, the common interdependent human relationships, such as the ones between students and teachers, between children and parents, between the youth and elders, are fading.

Machinery automation has also contributed much to the independence of people, because this technology makes people self-sufficient. For example, by using artificial intelligent devices like Auto Teller Machine, Vending Machine, microwave ovens, sweeping robots and face recognition access control system, people can deal with day-to-day transactions and household chores, or obtain common goods and services by themselves, with no more reliance on service personals, such as clerks in shops, tellers in bank counters, chefs in restaurants, or doormen in the gateway.

However, the main reason why people become more dependent is about the specialization in the post-industry age. Today, every social individual has been educated and trained to be expert at only one certain field. That is to way, a contemporary employee needs the technological communication and cooperation with co-workers in other departments or with another companies in different subjects, for the purpose of accomplishing the whole working project. Similarly, daily-life running and management are far beyond the limitation of any individual’s abilities. In other words, all people have to seriously depend on others who provide food, news, transportation, entertainment and maintenance of facilities.

In conclusion, I strongly believe the increasing independence of people is dramatic and should not be ignored. Although we are becoming specialized in narrow directions of careers, we have more independence and self-sufficiency, by the support of the Internet and automatic technologies.

Some people think news have no connection to people’s lives, so then it is a waste of time to read the news in the newspaper and watch television news programs. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
