In certain nations across the globe, there are strict laws prohibiting firearms whereas in other countries, gun possession is a right that is entrenched in the constitution of the land. Whether or not police officers ought to be allowed to carry guns and its role in promoting violence in society will be discussed.It is the job of police officers to protect individuals and property in a region and without proper possession of weapons, this makes their job more difficult. From one perspective, if police officers are unable to defend themselves by using guns while criminals are in possessions of such weapons, it would make it extremely challenging for police to maintain order. Furthermore, not carrying guns places the officers at risk and this defeats the purpose of protecting members of society.On the contrary, it is possible for certain police forces to not carry weapons and still do their jobs effectively. For instance, in a nation where handguns and rifles are forbidden, if police officers are in possession of these weapons, they could be misused or stolen by criminals, inciting greater violence. Moreover, if police carry weapons, it would signal to criminals that the only way to defeat them is to also possess them, thereby providing an incentive to get their hands on these dangerous weapons.All in all, in my view, police officers ought to carry guns as a preventative measure to ensure that order is maintained in society. Nevertheless, police must be trained effectively and the usage of those weapons must only be as a last resort to ensure that guns are not misused.
